I almost never DNF. But the reason I do is usually utter ambivalence. I'm happy to read books that I have quibbles with - minor or major - but if I just don't care, and I'm not learning anything or reading it to discuss, I'll put it down.

You explain this so well! I completely agree. Not even caring enough to discover my own opinion is definitely a reason I DNF.

I definitely DNF if a book isn't working for me for a variety of reasons. I am a firm believer in life being too short to stay with something that isn't working for me. I do read books I don't necessarily like, though. I need to find them compelling in some way to keep reading. However, what I really came here to say is that I definitely skim-to-finish if it is a mystery, thriller or romance that isn't working for me for some reason, but I want to know what happens. I love that term.

Yes to all these reasons! I don’t frequently DNF, but when I do it’s usually either because I’m not in the right headspace/ mood to be a generous and thoughtful reader OR it feels like the tone/ content is too harsh. If I just want to know what happened, I’ll skim to finish (or seek out spoilers haha). I used to feel pressure to skim-to-finish a book for class or book club, but these days I’m much more comfortable pausing a book and just reading some reviews or listening to author interviews (like the resources in our book club kits!) and trusting that’s enough to participate in discussion and I can come back and finish the book at my own pace.

I am not great at DNF for physical books but find it easier for audio!
