I’m interested in reading Glorious Exploits, but I’m slightly apprehensive because I know next to nothing about Athenian culture or the play Medea 😬 Is any prior knowledge needed to enjoy the book?
None at all! He writes in a way that is very accessible in that regard. All you need to know is that Syracuse and Athens were at war and Euripides wrote plays! I’m sure people with a deep knowledge of the context can get even more out of it, but no precious knowledge is necessary.
I am glad I listened to Bibliophobia early, before (and without) seeing hype. When I started, my eye was in the "phobia" part of the title rather than the "biblio"...glad I got to this book with that focus. I think Chihaya nodded, directly, to the understanding that a phobia is the result of a complex web of factors. It never fails to amaze me how brave someone is that can share their story...but even more so...the path it took to get to that point.
Totally agree! and very well said. Luckily I don’t think the hype or discourse impacted my reading of the book, but I do find myself uncomfortable with the way some people are pushing the book if that makes sense.
As a former ballet dancer and Pilates instructor, I can't sing its praises enough! I love the online program I do (the main instructor really talks through the technique which is so important); it's been a lifesaver post-kids for these years it's been difficult to schedule getting to the gym.
It's called Lindywell. I love that you can filter it to the amount of time you want to exercise as well as the area of focus. If you YouTube The Balanced Life with Robin Long (their old name), you can find some free videos to get a taste of it!
I appreciate your thoughts on Bibliophobia. I too found it much more layered than expected based on conversations I saw before reading, and the marketing too really.
Yes! I really appreciated the book...less so the conversations around it. Even though I do love that she herself enjoyed asking fellow readers about their Life Ruiners!

Fantastic 😊 Thank you!
My life ruiner is The Phantom Tollbooth, how sad my reading life peaked in childhood 😂
Hahaha. Maybe one day you’ll finally catch that Phantom Tollbooth high!

Oh that’s great to hear! What is the online program you do? I usually need to get out of the house to exercise but sometimes that’s just not possible!
