The M.L. Rio essay was fantastic--I love me some dark academia, but I've had similar hesitations about the genre, too. And as a former Catholic, the parallels she drew about Catholicism and academia absolutely FLOORED me
I started reading Impossible Creatures over the weekend and agree that it is exactly what I needed for the week we had! Glad you got some offline time 😊
I've really been loving the love it/loathe it episodes you're doing with other readers! They're so fun to listen to and seem to be just perfect for right now. I'm glad to have the content to listen to and hope that it's giving Chelsey the needed break without making too much work for you on your own. (You sound like you're having fun recording them, so I hope that's the case.) Thanks for all you do for your community!
Sara, thank you for sharing these vital books for the moment at hand. More than any other medium, art (written, visual, musical) has the power to transform us because it works not on our stubborn minds, but our pliable hearts. Much gratitude.
I think we share reflections on Our Share of Night this month! I have never read Enriquez’s short stories before and I now very much want too - I can sense I may enjoy them more than the novel! Which will very good, for many reasons, at times felt meandering and a bit bloated.
I was hungry for a lot more historical discussion (which isn’t a fault of the novel more so what I was interested in) so I think my next move is to find some fiction about the Dirty War!

Right?!
Rio does have a nice Substack...that is where I first read that article.

I’m glad you’re liking them! I’m definitely having fun with them but they are also absolutely a lot of work 😂
I love WHAT IF WE GET IT RIGHT? so much and am glad a little friendly book bullying got you to read it. I am even more glad you actually liked it!
Loved it! Thank you for book bullying me!
I also decided to delete instagram for the weekend. It’s exactly what I needed. And you now have me very intrigued about Impossible Creatures.
Yes! I needed a detox. I hope you try Impossible Creatures! It is so lovely

Oh that's a great idea, Martha! Let me know what you find!
I will!
