I love Rumer Godden and In This House of Brede had a huge effect on me when I first read it...many decades ago. I must read it again. I am surprised she hasn't lasted as a famous writer...her books are excellent.
Happy All the Time was my first Colwin, which I read early this year. I enjoyed it so much it wasn't long before I picked up Family Happiness. Happy reading!
Also: Dan! To be memorialized through books and acknowledged by your library--amazing! I hear they are planning to put together a book display based on his reading list, what an excellent way to honor a reader. Columbus is my local system, I really hope they give me this kind of send off one day 😁
From the time he was about seven, my youngest brother has been obsessed with the Greeking Out podcast. He’s 13 now and we still listen. Your daughter might be a smidge too young for it, but it will be a great thing to have for car rides when she’s older. Or now. You never now.
I am SO happy to hear you liked Sky Daddy as well! I've been so nervous to rec that one, but you said it so well. I'm really hoping we get more weird funny embarrassing smart books like this ... I feel like there's a lot of complaining about how nothing feels new anymore, but I think this is maybe where the freshness is? Anyway ty for sharing my review, and it's perfect that you mentioned Beautyland as well — one of my favorites !!
I'm glad you liked This House of Brede. I read it several years ago on the recommendation from Meredith at Currently Reading and felt like I'd discovered a real backlist gem. This is definitely one I could see myself coming back to as a slow chapter-before-bed read.
I also really enjoyed The Greengage Summer and appreciated Black Narcissus by Godden. Anyone have recommendations for which of her books I should pick up next?
I ready Happy All the Time earlier this year and just started Home Cooking! And I'm loving all the attention the Columbus Library (my library system) and What Dan Read are getting!

I enjoyed the article about Dan and his reading list too

Lots of good stuff here. Thanks, Sarah.
As a “I Read Canadian” supporter, I’m off to look up the Esi Edugyan list. ( I believe your link may be incorrect.)
Love the Colwin books

I already have Sky Daddy on deck for after I'm done with The Hopkins Manuscript so I'm glad to see your positive review!
I had no idea Black Water was a roman a clef about Chappaquidick - adding to my TBR ASAP!
