I love a check-in and reflection. It helps for some course correction and can help further cement some inklings we're having (good and bad).

One of my intentions, now check-in, was to not let FOMO pull me away from what feels of value at the time. I keep Italo Calvino's criteria, specifically number 2, in front of me and loosely apply the word 'classic'. Treasured or rich experience is what I always want.

Isn't it weird how we want to prioritize certain books and then somehow just don't??

I can only speak for myself, but I hope you do press publish on your literary criticism even if its not perfect because in fact that's the realness of being on Substack rather than a legacy pub.

Also need that list of 3rd person POV novels... The Fifth Season has been a great POV slump buster for me

Lauren Groff wrote about how much she hates first person POV in her introduction to the Best American Short Stories 2024 collection and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head! I’ve also been seeking out third person stories and there are fewer of them than I realized in new releases.
