I’m so glad that you gave us this list. I’ve loved hearing your thoughts on your other 2023 lists, but this is my favorite bc I can tell you made it just for you. Thank you, Sara.
Hi Sara! I’m listening to Wellness right now and it’s so awful (some of the characters behaviors!!) and so incredibly good (the smart writing!!) and there are so many little nuggets of depth that have me thinking. It’s also such a well done audiobook because the reader actually acts everything out. Super fun. I really disliked the fraud.
I’m glad you clarified the difference between this list and your one with Liz. I’m always most interested in the books that resonated and were loved (much more so than the best new releases), so thank you for this list.
I remember exactly where I was sitting (over 10 years ago) when I read McCracken’s memoir. I didn’t get up until I finished and it has stayed with me (in a way that her more recent one that I just read last year did not).
I'm so glad Swimmers made your list. I loved it too. It's also an excellent example that short books can be beautiful and memorable too. Wellness is on my list to read this year.
Hi Sara! 34 years ago, my son was stillborn. It was 1989. The system wasn’t set up for fetal loss.
Reading the Elizabeth McCracken book all these years later, I felt seen. Yes, she’s a marvelous writer but the book really saw me!
I'm so sorry for your loss, Michelle 💛

I LOVED The Swimmers!! Great story, interesting structure. It almost felt like two books in one.
