Love the question the reader asked! Based on all the (mostly negative) media portrayals of mother / child relationships, it feels like it’s an uphill battle and I’m doomed for even daring to hope that I could have a pleasant relationship with my kid when they’re grown. Thank you for the recs!

Exactly!! And I get that conflict makes great art, but can we see some creativity in what that conflict looks like?!

I really enjoy mother/daughter narratives, though I don't mind bad mothers as they make me feel a bit better about myself! For Abigail, I would recommend the Lucy Barton series by Elizabeth Strout and The Hero of This Book by Elizabeth McCracken. Both show that imperfect parents still have deep relationships with their children.

Also Casey Wilson's memoir - The Wreckage of my Presence has some really beautiful stories of motherhood that were encouraging - not guilt inducing.

Litographs is another fun option for book merch — you can get the actual text of popular books printed on a tee shirt, blanket, etc, and they have children's books, too. My kids think it's hilarious to "read their shirt."

I’ve totally embraced bookish merch in the spirit of unabashedly loving what I love haha. Another place where I’ve found bookish merch is the library! I adore my Boston Public Library baseball hat, my New York Public Library beanie, and my Seattle Public Library tote bag. Most big city libraries will have an online shop (often hosted by the Friends of the Library org), but often small town libraries have at least tote bags you can purchase and show off your love for books!

I also love adding bookish pins and patches to tote bags! I often find those in the gift sections of my local indie book stores 💛

I'm currently listening to Tom Lake on audio. Meryl Streep does a fantastic job! We all know she's a great actress but she can also do different voices.

I had not heard “hoopla” about book merch! Wow- seems like much ado about nothing! It blows my mind what gets blown out of proportion! Love my book totes and hats, as I do my Red Sox hat and Vermont sweatshirts. Bonkers IMO. Thanks for linking those articles!
