I read fiction to explore lives and worlds beyond my own, to escape, to imagine other lives I may have lived, to swoon, and to make myself think when it’s so easy to let myself mindlessly consume bits of media flowing past me. Also, your vacation looks delightful!
I read fiction to engage with the human experience and contemplate the human condition: what does it mean to be a human in this world? I read fiction to encounter and empathize with human experiences that I don’t / can’t have myself: how do we celebrate our uniqueness and our commonalities? I read fiction to move my emotions— sometimes to be entertained by something beautiful and fun! and other times for a good cathartic crying session! I read fiction for the love of stories and story-telling, for the love of craft and artistry. I read fiction for book club (aka community, conversation, connection). I read fiction just because I really like it haha.
Poolside reading is the best! I read fiction for many of the same reasons others have mentioned- to escape, to be entertained, to be moved, to learn about other's lives and experiences and since I began talking about books online in 2016 I also read fiction to connect with other readers which is the absolute best!!
I read and write fiction to figure out what I'm thinking. Reading fiction allows me to get inside another person (character's) mind. Once there, I can debate with myself as to whether I agree with them or not. Good characters make me think alot.
Thank you for sharing a reintroduction! I have been following you and a subscriber for a little bit now and have really enjoyed reading your newsletter and hearing your thoughts on books and reading. I didn't know the origination story of Fiction Matters, though, so I really enjoyed learning about that.
I read fiction to learn more about the innerworkings of my mind and others' minds. We are all so complex and yet the same and for me there is no better avenue than books and fiction to explore that unique part of the human condition. I also read fiction to comfort me and remind me that it's good to get out of my own head.
I read fiction for entertainment, to travel to other places, experience other lives, but I also read to marvel at the creativity of writers. Whether I am being sped along a plot line, examining the life of a character, or being awed by the novel use of language or dialogue, the imaginations of others so enrich and expand my experience.

Sunshine and books…sounds perfect!

That’s a great photo of you! I read fiction to feel, to be entertained, and to expand my knowledge of self and others.
I approve of this nap time use! I read fiction to connect, to learn, to escape, to experience, and to see the world through someone else's eyes.
I read because that's how I breathe. Books are oxygen. Fiction gets into my blood stream more quickly.
