Obviously most excited for your Guide and Traci's Guide, but the Atlantic Guide looks great too! Thanks for gift linking it! so many books so little time!
In the Watching category I saw the film Jane Austen Wrecked My Life last night. A young Frenchwoman works at Shakespeare & Company in Paris and goes on a writers' retreat at the Jane Austen Residency. Oh yeah, and finds true love. Oooh la la. A total charmer!
Thanks for these gift links, Sara. The LOTR piece is fascinating, if not unprecedented. One could write a similar article exploring early Christianity and its values of love, fellowship, sacrifice, and redemption. Over time, symbolism evolves, growing detached from its original representation. Even in their best light, both are male-dominated. Once, LOTR was everything to me, but as I matured—both as a person and a reader—I moved beyond it. Tolkien's sentence-level writing felt below my reading grade. The tech bros still seem to be holding court in their boys-only treehouse. But I still like to talk like Smeagol now and then.
Completely sold by your Tsushima recommendation, I think it’ll be the perfect title to pick up on my first ever trip to Japan next week <3 I also just discovered your newsletter and can’t wait to dive in! Thank you :)
I read Daughter of Time on your recommendation and loved it! I was already a Richard III truther, but Tey gave me a renewed zeal for cornering my neighbors on the sidewalk and trying to coax them over to the York side.
