So glad you enjoyed The Daughter of Time! One of my all time favorites. Also enjoyed the article you linked. If you’re interested in other detective fiction with deeper themes, I’d recommend Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers.
I loved Gaudy Night!! I read it right before I did a summer course at Oxford. I'd love to read more mysteries similar to those two if you have more to recommend!
I read I Who Have Never Known Men a few months ago and felt the same way -- it kept surprising me, but in quiet ways. As for Paradise Lost, it's been a very long time since I read it, but the Milton class I took in college has stuck with me more than most of my classes, and that was a VERY long time ago (early 90s). Probably need to do a reread.
I'd heard of The Daughter of Time but didn't know the premise at all so now I'm more interested! An enjoyable movie based on the true story of the woman who led the search for Richard III's is The Lost King, in case you wanted to check it out! Sally Hawkins was fantastic in it.
When you teased this kind of mystery novel on Instagram I immediately thought of recommending The Daughter of Time! Good to know I was on the right track but now I have nothing else to recommend to you lol.
Yes you do!! It is the wildest story with the craziest characters. When people say The Favorites is over-the-top, it just means they aren't familiar with the seedy underbelly of figure skating.
I read The Daughter of Time a few years ago after a rec by a bookseller at The Mysterious Bookstore and really enjoyed it! And I've been meaning to read more Tey ever since...
Yes! Such great dialogue and so compelling! I am also interested in reading more Tey. The others in the series sound more like standard mysteries but I liked her writing and characters, and I like that they're mostly pretty short!
I just finished I Who Have Never Known Men and loved it. A friend kept telling me to read it and I started it with so much resistance, worrying it would be too bleak. But I agree with your sentiments! What stood out to me the most was the journey and growth of the woman's internal life. Something I love and relate to. I also think fans of the show Silo will love this book.
I absolutely loved The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman. It’s a 900+ page historical fiction book about the life of Richard III. Cannot recommend it enough if you have the appetite for a long one!!
I read The Correspondent on April 29th Pub day. I downloaded it and wrote to the author as I was watching her be interviewed by your friend Brett Benner in his Behind the Stacks podcast the day the book came out. It was a wonderful read and I never would have thought I would like or finish a book written in letters. It will make you start corresponding by letter. The oldish protagonist Sybil is a cranky hoot. Just try to hate her. You can’t.

Yes! IWHNKM was so surprising and so moving. I would definitely do another Milton class. What a fascinating writer and thinker!

I will be checking out all the Richard III media I can, so thanks for the recommendation!

100% on the right track! I don't know how to go about finding similar books. I'm wondering if there's some nonfiction that would fill the void.
Welp...now I have to watch Meddling immediately. Well, immediately after I finish Adolescence!
